Auckland's pub history spreads well beyond the city centre. At Waiuku, the Kentish Hotel was built in 1851 and claims New Zealand's longest continuous liquor licence, issued in 1853. Pūhoi's pub was first licensed in 1879 as the German Hotel, serving a village founded by Bohemian settlers. In town, the 1898 Shakespeare Hotel became the country's first brewpub in 1986, while Morton Coutts, of the Ōtāhuhu family brewery that grew into DB, developed continuous fermentation, a method DB still uses.
