Small-town hotels carry much of the Bay of Plenty's pub story. In Ōpōtiki, the corner-site Masonic Hotel goes back to the late 1860s or early 1870s; rebuilt in brick in 1916, it was described in the 1920s as the official house of the Government Tourist Bureau. Along Church Street, the timber Opotiki Hotel was rebuilt in 1904 within two months of a fire, its licence kept alive in a temporary iron shed. At Te Teko, a hotel opened beside the Rangitāiki River in 1879, with a ferry carrying customers across.
