Canterbury's oldest liquor licence was issued on 1 July 1860 to John Hastie for an accommodation house at Hurunui, on the main route from Canterbury to Nelson and the West Coast, in an area where sheep entering the province had to be dipped. His widow completed the present limestone hotel in 1869, and it is now a Category 1 historic place. In Christchurch, Ward's beer was first brewed in 1854; renamed Canterbury Draught in 1990, it lost its brewery to the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.
