Life on the Chathams runs 45 minutes ahead of the mainland, and island hospitality works with what is at hand. With only about 600 residents and freight that generally arrives by ship, two days' sail away, the Hotel Chatham on the Waitangi waterfront is one of the few places to eat out, known for local crayfish, blue cod and pāua. Out at Kaingaroa, a few locals drift into the club for a beer once it opens in the late afternoon.
