Gisborne once billed itself as the first city in the world to greet the sunrise, a claim that now holds only in the summer months. Its beer has a strong local streak: Sunshine Brewery was started in 1989 by Geoff Logan and Gerry Maude, partly to give the district back the regional brewery it had lost, with Gisborne Gold lager as its flagship. Up the coast, the Tolaga Bay Inn was rebuilt in 1930 to a Tudor-style design by architect Sholto Smith after its predecessor was lost to fire.
