Palmerston North holds a quiet place in brewing history. Morton Coutts's grandfather set up a brewery in the town in 1900, and in the late 1950s it became home to what is described as the world's first brewery built for continuous fermentation, the method Coutts pioneered. Further north, Taumarunui lay within the King Country, where alcohol could not be sold from 1884 until 1954. On the coast, Whanganui's Rutland Arms Inn traces its welcome to travellers back to 1849.
