Hotels, Bars, Taverns and Pubs in Marlborough, New Zealand
Blenheim began in the 1850s as a flood-prone settlement known as the Beaver, and one of its first buildings was a hotel. James Sinclair, the "King of the Beaver", ran the Beaver Inn before moving to the Victoria Hotel where the Omaka and Ōpaoa rivers meet. Across the region, taverns sprang up wherever miners and stockmen gathered, and the 1864 Wakamarina gold rush gave Havelock a boost. Wine took over from 1973, yet beer kept a foothold: Moa was founded in Blenheim in 2003 by a local winemaker's son.
