Gold and beer run through Otago's history. Speight's has brewed on Dunedin's Rattray Street since 1876, and "Pride of the South" has long been its slogan; one of its Southern Man ads starred the Cardrona Hotel, a gold-rush survivor between Wānaka and Queenstown. Further inland, St Bathans grew up as a gold-rush centre, and its Vulcan Hotel, built of mud brick in 1882 and first called the Ballarat Hotel, is said to be haunted by a young woman in Room 1.
