Hotels, Bars, Pubs and Taverns in Southland, New Zealand
Southland's beer history goes back to March 1773, when Captain Cook's crew brewed a batch at Dusky Sound in Fiordland. Invercargill later went the other way, voting for local prohibition in December 1905 and staying dry for about 40 years, while illicit whisky from the Hokonui Hills passed into folklore. When licences returned, the city's liquor trade went to the Invercargill Licensing Trust, a community-owned model based on a scheme in Carlisle, England, that still returns its profits to local causes.
