Hotels, Bars, Pubs and Taverns in Taranaki, New Zealand
New Plymouth's White Hart Hotel has grown up with its town. The site began as a house in 1844 and became a hotel in 1859; the present Italianate timber building went up in 1886, and its white hart statue was added in 1901. It was the only building on its block to survive a 1916 fire, and in the 1970s it hosted the city's rock and punk scenes. Up the coast at Urenui, a brewery dating from 1989 is reckoned by some to be the country's oldest surviving craft brewery.
