Pubs, Hotels, Bars and Taverns in Tasman, New Zealand
Hops have shaped the Tasman landscape since the 1840s, when English and German settlers brought plants with them so they could keep brewing. The wider region once had more than a hundred hop kilns, and today's gardens are centred on Motueka, Riwaka, the Moutere, the Waimea Plains and Tapawera. In Upper Moutere, the Moutere Inn, founded around 1850 by German immigrant Cordt Bensemann, is regarded as New Zealand's oldest pub still trading in its original building.
