The Thistle Inn opened in Thorndon in 1840, so close to the shore that patrons often arrived by boat until the harbour was reclaimed in 1876, and legend counts Te Rauparaha among them. Rebuilt after an 1866 fire, it is recognised as the oldest hotel in New Zealand still on its original site, and Katherine Mansfield set a 1907 story there. Today the capital is often called the country's craft brewing capital, and its Beervana festival, held under that name since 2008, draws thousands of beer lovers each year.
