Few pub names raise a grin like "Formerly the Blackball Hilton", the title Blackball's hotel adopted after legal threats from the international chain. The town is also remembered for its 1908 miners' strike, which helped give rise to the Labour Party. Nearby Greymouth is home to Monteith's, whose roots reach back to 1868; when DB closed the brewery in 2001, the outcry was such that it reopened four days later. Hokitika, meanwhile, was briefly the busiest port in the country during the 1860s gold rush.
